For Distribution to CPsHacks and Dons - Teaching at the London University Journalism School 1919-1939: Its origin, development and influence.overlooked. Such reports are available for me at King’s. Not to have the studentsabout at University is a handicap to me in trying to take an all-round view of astudent’s work.Another big difficulty, which centralisation and unity of control would solve, isthat of admission of students. There are still too many, and the deplorable Englishof quite a number should have been an immediate disqualification for a course inwhich the power of expression in simple English is essential,University College has up to now not shown any disposition to consult me aboutthe suitability for the practical course of students they have enrolled. Centralisafionwould bring control of admissions under a simple and definite policy. For these -and other reasons - I hold the opinion that a specialised practical course like thiscan only be properly managed if centred in one place. It may be argued that the course has worked well in the past. We are dealing notwith the past, but with the future, and attempting to meet changes which have comeabout in the newspaper field and in the education world. It was recognition of those changes that brought about revision of the JournalismCourse two years ago: and reorganisafion of the practical side to bring the Courseabreast of modern newspaper requirements.I think I can claim to know the general feeling of the newspaper professiontowards this course. I have known it for years, and still know it, from the inside. Itis more friendly than it was, but it is still anything but enthusiastic. It is stillwatching what we are doing to make it really efficient. We have some very goodfriends in the profession, but we have still got to get the general body to take usseriously. That object is not likely to be realised so long as we decline to lend an ear to theconsidered opinions of the professional men we have invited to serve on ourJournalism Committee. One thing they have urged as the next step after the recentreforms is a Centralised Journalism Department at one college. If that cannot be brought about some of us who feel strongly the urgent need forreal cooperation between University and Press must push ahead for the setting upin the University of an, independent School of Journalism.291MOD100051462
