State of the Basin Report - 2003Although rivers and their associated floodplains encompass a range of different fish habitats, theyare all ecologically linked in a complex “fish migration network”. Therefore, from the point of viewof migrating fish species, the Mekong River Basin functions as one ecological unit. 18 The fishmigration corridors interconnect upstream spawning habitats with downstream nursery habitatsand dry season refuge habitats with wet season floodplain habitats. 19 The large floodplain areas inthe Mekong Delta and around the Tonle Sap Great Lake in Cambodia, are crucial nursery habitatsfor the Mekong fishery. 20Figure 2. Relationship between the maximum flood level of the season and the fish catch of the daior bagnet fishery in the Tonle Sap river.Note: This is a small fishery of 63 bagnet units (60 in 2001-02) targeting “white” fishmigrating out of the floodplains around the Great Lake to the Mekong river.Source: Sverdrup-Jensen 2002104
