8 - AgricultureUse of fertilisers and pesticidesUse of commercially-produced fertilisers and pesticides has been growing rapidly in the LMB,particularly following the market reforms in Lao PDR, Cambodia and Viet Nam. Governmentattempts to promote cash crops and greater cropping intensity have also increased the use ofthese products. 67 On a region-by-region basis, the use of such inputs is generally correlatedwith higher agricultural productivity. For example, in the Mekong corridor area of Lao PDR,both fertiliser and pesticide use and rice yields are much higher than in the upland parts of thecountry. The same comparison can be made between the Mekong Delta and the Central Highlandsareas of Viet Nam. More broadly, fertiliser use is much higher in Thailand and Viet Nam. Thosecountries use, respectively, 100 and 263 kg of mineral fertiliser per hectare of cropland. InCambodia and Lao PDR, fertiliser use is only 2 and 8 kg per hectare, respectively. In Thailand’sNortheast, although use of fertilisers is widespread (employed by about 86 percent of farmers)it is lower in intensity than the rest of the country, with an average application of only 47kg/hafor rice. 68The tables below show FAO estimates for use of various kinds of pesticides. Figures are notavailable for every year or for all varieties of pesticides used. There are no available data forCambodia in this dataset. 69 Survey data from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)suggest that in lowland Cambodia, the percentage of wet season farmers using pesticides rangesfrom 8-50 percent depending upon the province, with a range of 40-100 percent for dry seasonfarmers. 70 The same study found that the most commonly-used pesticides in the country fallunder the World Health Organisation’s “most hazardous” classification.Table 15.
