Julian looked back at the room, out the door, straining hiseyes to no avail, and in a sudden fearful moment wondered if he had gone blind.His grip tightened on the door handle, pulse speeding up, craning his ears for a sound – any sound –other than the breathing of his floormates.Julian rubbed his eyes with his free hand, blinking, a sudden desperation to see rising in him...He bent his head, closed his eyes, tried to steady his breathing. Don't panic, he told himself.He raised his head and took wary steps out the door, moving his hands along to feel the way.
