There<strong>for</strong>e, we have received it as orthodoxand salutary to the holy and Catholic and Apostolic <strong>Church</strong>, andhave decreed that it is right that his name be inserted in thediptychs of the holy churches.§ 108. Rome, Constantinople, and the Lombard State <strong>Church</strong> inthe Seventh Century[673]The Sixth General Council was the last great diplomatic triumphof Rome in the East in matters of faith, though two centuriesafter, in the matter of Photius, Rome played a brilliant part inthe internal affairs of the Eastern <strong>Church</strong>. Immediately after thecouncil of 681, it was felt that the West, of which the Greekshad grown very jealous, had triumphed over the East, especiallyas several of the leading patriarchs had been condemned.Monotheletism, furthermore, was too strongly intrenched in theEast to be removed by a single conciliar action. It was feltnecessary to take action to confirm the results of Constantinoplein 681.
