On the Marriage of the Clergy.The following canon permits subdeacons and priests if marriedbefore ordination to continue to live in marriage relations withtheir wives. But they are not allowed to marry a second timeor to marry a widow. Neither are bishops to remain married;but if they are married when elected, their wives must enter amonastery at a distance. With this canon should be comparedthe earlier legislation of Nicæa, v. supra, § 78, and also thelaw of Justinian, v. supra, § 94.308 I.e., Gregory Nazianzus.309 Probably that of 256.
