I received from his own hand his dispatches for theGovernor General, and the presents designed for him, Avere spread outbefore me.He begged me to bear in remembrance his unchanged andsteady friendship;to state the misfortune of the Lama's having thoughtlit to withdraw himself from the world, and their consequent helplesssituation ;as he was now only an infant, unable to comfort them withhis counsel and advice; but, added he, be not cast down; when heshall become of age, and resume the Musnud, allwill be well.On the following day, I again waited upon the Regent, and I hadnot long been with him, when he accosted me in the followingwords" I had yesterday a vision of our tutelary deity, and to me it was aday replete with much interesting and important matter.This guardianpower, who inspires us with his illuminations, on every momentousand great occasion, indulged me with adivination, from which1 have collected that every thing will be well. Set your heart at rest,therefore, for though a separation is about to take place between us,our friendship will not cease to exist, but, through the favour of aninterposing providence, you may rest assured it will increase, andterminate eventually in that which will be for the best."
