452 APPENDIX.and coral, and tlie otlier coral alone, which in the abundance of your kindnessand favour you sent as a gift to me, arrived in a happy hour, and .wasthe cause of much satisfaction,And regarding your refusal to receive the value of the nine strings of pearls,and of the two chaplets of coral, directing, on the contrary, that they shouldbe presented as a gift ; as the pearls are of great beauty and of exceedinghigh price, and forasmuch as your friendship to Maha Gooroo was evidentand apparent,in consideration of these things, I could not presume totake them.I foiTnerly wrote to you, requesting that, with the value of unwrought goldwhich 1 sent to you, certain pearls and coral might be purchased, and thatthe price of the pearls, and the coral, might be balanced by the producethereof; and if it should be deficient for that purpose, that you wouldinform me of that deficiency,so that I might write to you, and transmit thatwhich was wanting; and if, on the contrary, there should be a surplusremaining out of the value of the gold, that other pearls, and other coral, ofthe first quality, might be purchased therewith.And I have moreover strong hope, and firm expectation, that as you formerlyshewed kindness and attentionto the application respecting the villageof the Raja, so in regard to the certain portion of land, and the mahsoolthereon, that favour will be shewn. I presume to repeat the request, thatcon esponding to the application of Maha Gooroo, you will shew kindnessand favour with respectto that portion of land, and in settling the disputesappertaining thereto ;and furthermore, that you will grant a lot of land in thenoble city of Calcutta, on the bank of the river. Concerning this affair Ihave spoken fully and particularly tothe Gosein, Poorungheer, and he willmake known to you the whole thereof, and you will comply with my request.And I have communicated other matters, and other things, to the faithfulPooruncrheer, by whom you will be informed of them. In compliance withhis wishes, you will permit him to remain under the shadow of your protection,and favour him with such marks of your kindness, as may enablehim to pass his days in returning thanks for your goodness.
