After several compliments, we <strong>to</strong>oka cup <strong>of</strong> tea, and <strong>the</strong> usual spirituous liquors ; and he conducted me<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> bot<strong>to</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stairs, where he presented me with a white pelonghandkerchief:we <strong>the</strong>n shook hands, and parted.The Soobah was about thirty years <strong>of</strong> age, <strong>of</strong> a middl<strong>in</strong>g stature, hisperson good, nei<strong>the</strong>r meagre nor corpulent ;his complexion clear, andnot quite <strong>of</strong> so deep a hue as that <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> his countrymen, though<strong>the</strong>y are all much less swarthy than <strong>the</strong> natives <strong>of</strong> Bengal.
