19. Submitted Specimens<br />

All specimens submitted must be properly labeled. The label should include the following<br />

information:<br />

• Date<br />

• Case number<br />

• Patient’s name<br />

• Age of patient<br />

• Physician’s initials<br />

20. Laboratory Exams<br />

The following are possible laboratory exams to be performed when evaluating a child abuse patient:<br />

• Swab for presence of semen for cases occurring within 72 hours (Swab mouth, vagina,<br />

rectum and any other site on the body suspicious for abuse)<br />

• Microscopic examination of vaginal swabs/TMG<br />

• Trichomonas (exam is wet mount)<br />

• Monilia (exam is KOH prep)<br />

• Gram stain<br />

• Culture for gonorrhea and chlamydia when resources are available<br />

• Cervical swabs<br />

• Oral swabs<br />

• Rectal swabs<br />

• Urethral swabs<br />

• Vaginal swabs<br />

• DNA analysis when resources are available<br />

• Test for presence of drugs and alcohol when resources are available<br />

• Pregnancy test/ultrasound when resources are available<br />

• Blood test for sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., VDRL, Hepatitis B, HIV) when<br />

resources are available
