Redundant Hymen: *Abundant hymenal tissue which tends to fold back upon itself or<br />

protrude. A common finding in females whose hymenal membranes are<br />

under the influence of estrogen (both infants and adolescents).<br />

Rolled Edges *The edge (border) of the hymen which tends to roll inward or outward<br />

(of the hymen): upon itself. May unfold through the use of knee-chest position,<br />

application of water, through manipulation with a moistened Q-tip or<br />

other techniques.<br />

Septal Remnant: *Small appendage attached to the edge of the hymen. Commo<strong>nl</strong>y<br />

(on the hymen) located in the midline on the posterior rim.<br />

Septated Hymen: *Hymen with band(s) of tissue that bisects the orifice creating two or<br />

more openings.<br />

Transection: *Tear or laceration through the entire width of the hymenal membrane.<br />

(of the hymen) In complete transection, the tear extends to (or through) its attachment to<br />

the vaginal wall. In a partial transection, the tear does not extend to its<br />

attachment to the vaginal wall.<br />

Vagina: *The uterovaginal (genital) canal in the female. This internal structure<br />

extends from the uterine cervix to the inner aspect of the hymen.<br />

Vaginal Introitus: *The pubovaginalis muscle which forms the entrance to the vagina.<br />

Frequently used synonymously with hymenal orifice.<br />

Vestibule (vaginal): *An anatomical cavity containing the openings of the vagina, the<br />

urethra, and the ducts of Bartholin’s glands. Bordered by the clitoris<br />

anteriorly, the labia on the sides and the posterior commissure<br />

(fourchette) posteriorly (inferiorly). The vestibule encompasses the<br />

fossa navicularis immediately posterior (inferior) to the vaginal introitus.<br />

Virgin or Virgin State *The use of this term is to be discouraged due to its non-specificity.<br />

Vulva: *The external genitalia or pudendum of the female. Includes the mons<br />

pubis, clitoris, labia majora, labia minora, vaginal vestibule, urethral<br />

orifice, vaginal orifice, hymen, and posterior fourchette (or<br />

commissure).
