WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES: BARRIERS AND FACILITATORS TO ACCESSING SERVICES DURING PREGNANCY,CHILDBIRTH AND EARLY MOTHERHOODSchool of Nursing <strong>and</strong> Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin<strong>Facilita<strong>to</strong>rs</strong> <strong>to</strong> improve access <strong>to</strong> the services included use of telephoneamplifiers <strong>and</strong>/or pic<strong>to</strong>rial signage, audible, visual <strong>and</strong> tactile systems in waitingrooms <strong>and</strong> information provided in an appropriate language <strong>and</strong> format.Extended consultation times <strong>and</strong> culturally sensitive antenatal educationclasses were recommended. Disability awareness <strong>and</strong> training for healthprofessionals, particularly in speaking correctly for lip-readers, <strong>and</strong> in the use ofbasic sign language should be encouraged. It was also found that theemployment of sign language interpreters in appropriate language is useful forwomen <strong>with</strong> sensory loss who are from ethnic minority groups.88
