Research on the care of women <strong>with</strong> intellectual disabilitiesduring pregnancy, childbirth <strong>and</strong> early motherhoodDue <strong>to</strong> the lack of comprehensive investigative work concerning maternity carefor women <strong>with</strong> intellectual disabilities, an extensive programme of explora<strong>to</strong>ryresearch is required <strong>to</strong> ascertain their views <strong>and</strong> experiences as they journeythrough pregnancy, childbirth <strong>and</strong> early motherhood. This can form the basis offurther work targeted at developing specific aspects of care identified as lackingor below quality. The first stage of this explora<strong>to</strong>ry work was addressed as onesection of part 3 of this study commissioned by the NDA.131
