Facilitators to increase health professionals’ knowledgeAll health professionals should receive periodic training on the correct and safehandling and transfer of women with a physical disability (Baker et al, 1997;Grabois et al, 1999). Such training should encourage and facilitateprofessionals to use women’s own adaptive equipment (Carty et al, 1993).Instigating early referral systems to allied professionals, such as occupationaltherapists or physiotherapists (Carty et al, 1993; Thomas and Curtis, 1997;Thomas, 1998; Lipson and Rogers, 2000; WWDA, 2004; RCN, 2007), willfacilitate an assessment of need. Health professionals should also enhancetheir knowledge of the services and supports available to women withdisabilities (RCN, 2007), in order to be able to inform women as required. Inorder to develop their knowledge, health professionals should listen to, andlearn from, women with disabilities, recognising that they are the experts interms of their disability (Baker et al, 1997; Campion, 1997; Crow, 2003; D’Eathet al, 2005; RCN, 2007).3.9. SummaryThis chapter commenced with a definition of the term ‘access to services’,which has been described as having 5 components: availability, accessibility,accommodation, affordability and acceptability. Barriers reducing theaccessibility of services were found to relate to the location and models of care,difficulties in transport, and moving around the physical environment. Thesewere perhaps the most obvious barriers encountered, and led to difficulties forthe women concerned. Barriers to the accommodation of women with physicaldisabilities centred mainly on the lack of provision of suitable health informationand less so around difficulties with communication, which tended to be causedby physical mal-positioning of reception desks and staff. Barriers to theacceptability of services to women were encountered in terms of lack ofknowledge and negative attitudes and behaviours from staff, which upset manywomen.73

Most factors described related to improving access to buildings andservices, with some emphasis on developing ease of movement around thephysical environment. Facilitators to accommodation of women with physicaldisabilities focussed on the provision of sensitive antenatal education classes.Facilitating acceptability of services for these women would requireconsiderable work on developing health professionals’ knowledge of, andattitudes towards, physical disability.74
