Research on the care of women with intellectual disabilitiesduring pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhoodDue to the lack of comprehensive investigative work concerning maternity carefor women with intellectual disabilities, an extensive programme of exploratoryresearch is required to ascertain their views and experiences as they journeythrough pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood. This can then be followedon by research targeted at developing specific aspects of care identified aslacking or below quality. The first stage of this exploratory work was conductedas one section of part 3 of this study commissioned by the NDA.7. ConclusionThe National Disability Authority and National Women’s Council of Ireland havepreviously highlighted the need to improve access to reproductive and sexualhealth services for women with disabilities in Ireland, as well as the need fordisability awareness training among health professionals (NWCI, 2001; NDA,2007). Evidence from the NDA’s second national survey suggests that people’sattitudes towards disability are improving (NDA, 2007) but it is apparent that anumber of inequalities for women with disabilities still exist. The literaturepresented here corroborates that view and emphasises the need to improve thecare services for women with disabilities attempting to access health careduring pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood.The dearth of literature in this review from the Irish perspective highlights theneed for research in this area, and emphasises the importance of the currentstudy commissioned by the National Disability Authority, of which this reviewforms the first part. These 2 documents demonstrate aneed for comprehensive policy development and planning in consultation withwomen with disabilities to provide an improved response to the maternityservice needs of this group.The starting point for any change in service provision has to be with theindividuals seeking that service (Kennedy and Murphy-Lawless, 2002), so ifaccess to health services during childbirth, pregnancy and early motherhood isto be improved for women with disabilities, their experiences must bedocumented. The third section of the NDA-commissioned work, therefore,sought the experiences of women with disabilities in terms of the strengths andweaknesses of publicly-funded Irish health services provided to them in relationto pregnancy, childbirth, and early motherhood, with a view to informing thedevelopment and improvement of maternity care services for women withdisability in Ireland (Begley et al, 2010).xviii
