Information on Section 1: Roof CoveringsGeneral InformationSection 1: Roof Coverings in the 2000 edition ofNRCA’s Low-Slope Roofing Materials Guide is dividedinto 10 primary sections based on roof covering producttype. These primary sections are as follows:• Built-up membrane• Modified bitumen sheet membrane• PVC single-ply membrane• EPDM single-ply membrane• CSPE single-ply membrane• PIB single-ply membrane• TPO single-ply membrane• Other prefabricated single-ply membranes• Spray polyurethane foam-based• Metal panelsA specific description of each particular roof coveringtype and a general description of the specificinformation contained within each primary section areincluded at the conclusion of this General Informationsection. An index of the manufacturers included in Section 1:Roof Coverings and locations of their specific productswithin this section immediately follows this RoofCoverings section.9. Hot and/or cold applied10. Deck type11. Slope requirements12. Number of plies13. Type of felt14. Interply adhesive15. Surfacing16. Weight17. Restricted regions18. Year of first commercial use19. Test results per NBS BSS #55Reporting of test result data for built-up membranesystems is provided in Item 19: Test Results per NBSBSS #55 on the basis of the National Bureau ofStandards (NBS) Building Science Series (BSS) #55,titled “Preliminary Criteria for Bituminous MembraneRoofing”, dated 1974.Warranty information for built-up membrane roofsystems is provided in Section 5: Roof MembraneWarranties.Users of the guide who are interested in additionalinformation regarding built-up membrane roof systemsare encouraged to refer to The NRCA Roofing andWaterproofing Manual, Fourth Edition.Built-Up MembraneA built-up roof membrane is defined in The NRCARoofing and Waterproofing Manual, Fourth Edition as“a continuous, semi-flexible multi-ply roof membrane, consisting of plies or layers of saturated felts, coatedfelts, fabrics or mats between which alternate layers ofbitumen are applied. Generally, built-up roofmembranes are surfaced with mineral aggregate andbitumen, a liquid-applied coating or a granule-surfacedcap sheet.”Information on built-up membrane products ispresented in the guide on the basis of built-upmembrane system designations provided by the listingmanufacturers. Manufacturers’ system designationstypically identify the specific membrane substrate, number and type of membrane plies, interply bitumenand surfacing.Specific listing information included in the guide formanufacturers’ built-up membrane systemspecifications is as follows:1. Number of regional service locations2. Licensed application agreement3. Distribution method4. Preformed accessories available5. Limitations/Restrictions6. Sales/Technical information7. Felts data: Trade name8. Specification number27Modified Bitumen Sheet MembraneA modified bitumen sheet membrane is defined in TheNRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual, FourthEdition as a “composite sheet consisting of a polymermodified bitumen often reinforced and sometimessurfaced with various types of mats, films, foils andmineral granules.” Polymer modified bitumen is furtherdefined as “a bitumen modified through the inclusion ofone or more polymers.” The most common modifiersused in bitumen polymer modification are atacticpolypropylene (APP) and styrene butadiene styrene(SBS).Information on modified bitumen sheet products ispresented in the guide in three parts: Part 1: GeneralInformation, Part 2: Test Results and Part 3: ModifiedBitumen Specifications. Part 2: Test Results is furtherdivided into two sections based upon polymer modifiertype, APP Modified Bitumen Part 2: Test Results andSBS Modified Bitumen Part 2: Test Results.Specific listing information included in Part 1: GeneralInformation is as follows:1. Company name2. Product name3. Product description4. Kinds of field surfacing required5. Use in6. Field joint lap method7. Types of roof systems
