LTHE LADIES, THE GWICH'IN, AND THE RATANOTE ON THE TEXTThe Ladies, the Gwich'in, and the Rat reprints the text of ArcticAdventure. Because, in 1961,the preparation of the book for publication was flawed, errors of spelling andsome punctuation have here been corrected, paragraphing has been occasionall)condensed, and capitalization and forms for times, dates, and currencies havebeen standardized. Vyvyan's penchant for hyphenated words has been gentl),reined in; otherwise, the text is as she published it. Several pages of the editedtypescript have survived, and these indicate that in 1960 Vyvyan strenuousl),resisted the suggested corrections of an enthusiastic young editor in the emplo)'of Peter Owen, her English publisher (the book was distributed in Canada b)'Copp Clark), but she did trim her original typescript by some 9,800 words. Thesource for some of this deleted material is likely the portions of her field notesthat do not appear in her book. All such passages have been set in italics inAppendix One. Readers can conveniently compare the publication to the writingdone during the journey, and consider what additions and shaping into bookform took place thirty-five years later.Editorial notes based on Vyvyan's chapters and field notes appear afterAppendix Two. In order not to interrupt the flow of the book, no note numbershave been introduced into the text. Instead, where a note has been prepared towiden the context ofVyvyan's text, it is introduced by the quotation (in bold) ofthe passage to which it relates. Of course, the notes are arranged by chapter andin order within each chapter.Any editorial notes prompted by passages that appear only in Vyvyan's orDorrien Smith's field notes have been placed at the end of each of the chapterdivisions in the editorial notes section. They appear under the chapter whoseevents correspond to the date of the particular field note. To facilitate their use,the dates covered by each chapter are given in parentheses in the editorial notes,after the chapter number and title.
