The men could neither push norpaddle the canoe up any such reach <strong>of</strong> water. nor could they take to tracking thecanoe until a pathway was cleared along the bank. They adopted a new form <strong>of</strong>progress. They would clear a track. with their axes. on the very edge <strong>of</strong> the bank.Then Lazarus would sit in the canoe. steering it outward from the snags at thewater's edge which were too firmly wedged in the river bed to be destroyed.
