So little of our lives do we spendin the heart of action. Before we made that journey, Alaska was only a daydream.N ow it is little more than a memory.I am only trying to recapture, with the help ofletters and diaries, the middlestate, the actuality oflife when we made that journey from Cornwall to Alaska inthe summer months of 1926, remembering, as I write, the prayer of Henry vanDyke:"Teach me to see the local colour without being blind to the inner light."
