Recovering the Original Evidence<br />
Whenever poss ble, subm t to the Laboratory the<br />
ev dence bear ng the or g nal mpress on. If the<br />
ev dence cannot be subm tted to the Laboratory,<br />
use the follow ng techn ques to recover the<br />
ev dence.<br />
Casting Three-Dimensional Impressions<br />
Cast ng a three-d mens onal mpress on n so l,<br />
sand, or snow s necessary to capture deta l for<br />
exam nat on. Dental stone, w th a compress ve<br />
strength <strong>of</strong> 8,000 ps or greater, must be used for<br />
cast ng all mpress ons. The compress ve strength<br />
s l sted on the conta ner along w th the proper<br />
rat o <strong>of</strong> powder to water used for m x ng. Dental<br />
stone s ava lable through local dental supply<br />
houses. Colored dental stone s preferred.<br />
Plaster <strong>of</strong> par s, model ng plasters, and dental<br />
plasters are not sufficiently hard, do not resist<br />
abras on when cleaned, and must not be used.<br />
