exam nat ons <strong>of</strong> ev dence that e ther conta ns or s<br />
contam nated w th hazardous chem cal, b olog cal,<br />
and/or rad olog cal mater al.<br />
Depend ng on the nature <strong>of</strong> the threat— .e.,<br />
chem cal, b olog cal, or rad olog cal—ev dence<br />
exam nat ons w ll be conducted by the Laboratory<br />
or at a des gnated <strong>FBI</strong> partner laboratory spec ally<br />
equ pped to handle hazardous mater als.<br />
The Laboratory can d rect or apply the use <strong>of</strong><br />
spec al zed analyt cal techn ques to dent fy and<br />
character ze a w de range <strong>of</strong> b olog cal pathogens,<br />
tox ns, chem cal agents, tox c chem cals, and<br />
trace rad oact ve compounds that const tute a<br />
suspected or potent al WMD.<br />
The <strong>FBI</strong>’s Hazardous Ev dence Analys s Team<br />
(HEAT), composed <strong>of</strong> forens c exam ners and<br />
techn c ans from the var ous <strong>FBI</strong> Laboratory<br />
d sc pl nes, s tra ned to safely conduct trad t onal<br />
exam nat ons <strong>of</strong> hazardous ev dence. These<br />
exam nat ons are conducted at <strong>FBI</strong> partner<br />
laborator es.<br />
Suspected or confirmed WMD crime scenes<br />
should be handled only by qualified personnel.<br />
