Excavation Safety<br />
All excavat ons must meet the requ rements set<br />
forth n OSHA’s standards for excavat ons,<br />
29 CFR 1926.650, 8 1926.651, 9 and 1926.652. 10<br />
Each employee n an excavat on shall be<br />
protected from cave- ns by an adequate protect ve<br />
system des gned n accordance w th 29 CFR<br />
1926.652(b) or 29 CFR 1926.652(c), 10 unless<br />
excavations are less than five feet in depth and<br />
exam nat on <strong>of</strong> the ground s made by a<br />
competent person to prevent cave- ns. A<br />
competent person s someone capable <strong>of</strong><br />
dent fy ng ex st ng and pred ctable hazards n<br />
the surround ngs or work ng cond t ons that are<br />
unsan tary, hazardous, or dangerous to<br />
employees and who has the author zat on to take<br />
prompt correct ve act on to el m nate those<br />
hazards.<br />
As w th all excavat ons, personnel should be<br />
aware <strong>of</strong> bur ed ut l t es and control stand ng<br />
water, hazardous environments, confined spaces,<br />
and oxygen-deficient atmospheres.<br />
X-Ray Safety<br />
Portable, handheld X-ray mach nes, <strong>of</strong>ten used to<br />
dent fy the contents <strong>of</strong> unknown packages, pose<br />
a r sk for exposure to X-ray rad at on at cr me<br />
scenes.<br />
