Medical directors andprogram managers must decide when it should be required. The state protocols should definewhich situations should require online medical direction and which situations should requirehospital notification only (no need for a physician to be online). The requirement to speak with aphysician during every ALS intervention is not supported and may take emergency physiciansaway from other patient care duties.Recommendation 33: The state EMS protocol should state the instances where onlinephysician direction is required. There is no evidence that supports requiring physician contactfor every patient encounter. THE NEW JERSEY STATE EMS SYSTEMThe New Jersey Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) was created in 1970 aspart of the Department of Health and Senior Services.
