DecisionSupport 7Discussion and ApplicabilityThe review and case studies provide a number ofpractical lessons on the application of AHP toadaptation. They provide useful information onthe types of adaptation problem types whereAHP might be appropriate, as well as dataneeds, resource requirements and good practice. The approach is considered particularlyapplicable when assessing both quantitative andqualitative criteria, even those which are notdirectly comparable using conventional decisionsupport techniques. While promising, it isnecessary to understand the limitations of theapproach e.g. the evaluation and analysis canbecome more complicated the higher thenumber of options and criteria / sub-criteria thatare included. However, the ability to comparetangibles and intangibles and incorporate arange of preferences from different actors ishighly relevant where differing decision lifetimes, time horizons, scales and uncertainty areimportant considerations.ReferencesBernetti, I., Menghini, S., Marinelli, N., Sacchelli,S. & Alampi Sottini, V.
