Environment<strong>OneSteel</strong> Duragal products used in the construction of environmentally friendly homes.<strong>OneSteel</strong> has implemented an environmentmanagement system which utilises the ISO 14001standard as the principal guideline for achievement.A review of considered selected sites as well asbusiness and corporate head office systems wasundertaken against this standard to establish abenchmark for measurement. It is intended toprogressively improve <strong>OneSteel</strong>’s overall positionagainst this benchmark over the next two years.A status review is planned to be conducted on theMarket Mills and Distribution businesses by anexternal body in 2002. Whyalla Steelworks has setan internal target to seek ISO 14001 certification inthe <strong>2001</strong>/02 financial year.ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCEAgainst regulatory licences and agreements, fiveminor breaches were recorded. These did not resultin any penalty action by the regulatory bodies.The cause for the breaches were investigated andcorrective and preventative actions were put inplace as appropriate.During the year there were no incidents that had aninternal severity rating of moderate or above. Onlyone minor incident resulted in regulatory bodypenalty action. Under Victorian legislation,<strong>OneSteel</strong>’s Geelong Wire Mill incurred a smallfine of $5,000 for a minor incident involving thespillage of sulphuric acid at the Acid RecoveryPlant. The size of the fine took into account thegood environmental performance history of thesite, the insignificant observable impact and theremedial action taken.ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES DURING THE YEAR<strong>OneSteel</strong>’s Rod and Bar Mill operations inNewcastle occupies land that was formerly partof the BHP Newcastle Steelworks site. The site iscurrently being examined by <strong>OneSteel</strong>, forcontaminants that are present on the site followinga recent declaration by the New South WalesEnvironment and Protection Authority (EPA) that thesite is an “investigation area”.The examination is well underway and will definethe need for, and extent of, any management orremedial actions required. Financial provisionshave been made for these investigations andremedial options.<strong>OneSteel</strong>’s Sydney Steel Mill recently undertook aHealth Risk Assessment examining the impact, ifany, of dioxin emissions from the baghouse stackassociated with the steel production process.23
