1.3.1.4 Schools and Students by Urban and Rural Area
It is important to define urban and rural schools in the context of an agreed frame of reference. Thus
far, there is no such clear definition as to what constitute urban and rural schools. Remoteness and
insecurity are the two main challenges faced by the education system in Afghanistan today. The
identification of rural and urban students play vital role in the mobilization of resources accordingly.
In the present situation, urban schools are easily accessible and students feel secure while being part
of the education system; on the other hand, rural students lack access to the education resources and
are facing a lot of security issues for schooling. There are 11,460 schools, 16% are in urban areas
and 83% are in rural areas. Out of the total 6,504.715 students, 36% are in urban schools and 64%
are in rural schools.

There are 11,460 General Education schools, 45%
Primary, 32% Lower Secondary and 24% Upper
Secondary. In these schools, there are 6,504,715
students, 75% are in Primary, 19% are in Lower
Secondary and 6% are in Higher Secondary. Among
the primary school, there are 61% male and 39%
female, in lower secondary school there are 67%
male and 33% female and in higher secondary
school, there are 72% male and 28% female.
