1.3.1.4 Schools and Students by Urban and Rural Area<br />

It is important to define urban and rural schools in the context <strong>of</strong> an agreed frame <strong>of</strong> reference. Thus<br />

far, there is no such clear definition as to what constitute urban and rural schools. Remoteness and<br />

insecurity are the two main challenges faced by the education system in Afghanistan today. The<br />

identification <strong>of</strong> rural and urban students play vital role in the mobilization <strong>of</strong> resources accordingly.<br />

In the present situation, urban schools are easily accessible and students feel secure while being part<br />

<strong>of</strong> the education system; on the other hand, rural students lack access to the education resources and<br />

are facing a lot <strong>of</strong> security issues for schooling. There are 11,460 schools, 16% are in urban areas<br />

and 83% are in rural areas. Out <strong>of</strong> the total 6,504.715 students, 36% are in urban schools and 64%<br />

are in rural schools.<br />

There are 11,460 General <strong>Education</strong> schools, 45%<br />

Primary, 32% Lower Secondary and 24% Upper<br />

Secondary. In these schools, there are 6,504,715<br />

students, 75% are in Primary, 19% are in Lower<br />

Secondary and 6% are in Higher Secondary. Among<br />

the primary school, there are 61% male and 39%<br />

female, in lower secondary school there are 67%<br />

male and 33% female and in higher secondary<br />

school, there are 72% male and 28% female.<br />
