146 Appendix AThe 0.95 Tesla scanner has a vertical insert with an inner diameter of 31 mm. Theinsert was designed to measure both hydrogen (at 40.5 MHz) and deuterium (at 6.23MHz). Two different rf circuits are used which share a single solenoid coil (see FigureA.6). The coil is wound around a Faraday shield which reduces the effect of variations inthe dielectric permittivity of the sample on the tuning [154]. A switch is placed betweenthe coil and the two rf circuits which allows for fast toggling between the measurement ofhydrogen or deuterium. Each circuit has its own duplexer tuned at the proper frequency.The frequency of the transmitted rf power is set by the transmitter. The rf power is fedto one of the duplexers through a relay. Another relay is used to connect the properduplexer to the amplifier for the incoming rf signal which is further processed in the dataacquisition system (DAS). The (mechanical) switch and both relays are controlled bythe DAS. A set of Anderson coils is used to produce a 1D static gradient in the verticaldirection. Both scanners are operated using software developed in the laboratory [155].
