2 Characteristics of the Respondents<br />

2.1 Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

A lmost all the respondent companies are privately-owned (87.5%),<br />

except one which is public and two that are jo<strong>in</strong>t ventures between<br />

the State and the Private Sector (Figure 1 and Table 1). The<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g and f<strong>in</strong>ancial services are the most predom<strong>in</strong>ant sectors<br />

(Figure 2 and Table 2). The majority of the companies employ more<br />

than 50 workers and 50% have been <strong>in</strong> operation for over ten years<br />

(Tables 3, 4 and 5). Table 6 illustrates the breakdown of companies by<br />

activities and period of operation, highlight<strong>in</strong>g the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial services sectors. Seven companies were <strong>in</strong> operation for 2 to<br />

5 years, 9 companies for 9 to 10 years and 16 companies for more<br />

than 10 years.<br />

15.6% of companies with a turnover below USD 25,000, 12.5%<br />

import from with<strong>in</strong> <strong>SADC</strong> and another 12.5% from outside <strong>SADC</strong>. Of<br />

the same group of companies, 9.4% export to other <strong>SADC</strong> countries<br />

and only 3.1% export to countries outside <strong>SADC</strong>. 12.5% of an annual<br />

turnover of USD 50,001 and USD 100,000, 9.4% import from with<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>SADC</strong> and 12.5% from outside <strong>SADC</strong>. None of the companies export<br />

to other <strong>SADC</strong> countries but 3.1% export to outside <strong>SADC</strong>. Companies<br />

with 62.5 % of a turnover higher than USD 100,000, 35.5% import<br />

from with<strong>in</strong> <strong>SADC</strong>, 25.0% import from outside <strong>SADC</strong>. In terms of<br />

exports, the same group of companies, 15.6% export to other <strong>SADC</strong><br />

countries, 18.8% export to countries outside <strong>SADC</strong>. There is a<br />

substantial number of companies <strong>in</strong>quired which did not respond to<br />

questions regard<strong>in</strong>g exports and imports (Table 7).<br />

In relation to ma<strong>in</strong> relevance country of export, five companies export<br />

to EU, three to Zimbabwe and another three to South Africa, Swaziland<br />

and other markets. The first most relevant market represented a %age<br />

of sales of 45%, 27% and 9% respectively. As the second most relevant<br />

market, of the 5 respondent companies, 2 export to South Africa and<br />

the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 3 to Swaziland, Zimbabwe and USA. As the third most<br />

relevant Market only 3 companies export to Malawi, South Africa and<br />

other markets (Table 8).<br />
