Severe osteoporosisSevere rheumatoidarthritisStrokeThe life insured:• before the age of 50, suffers at least two vertebral body fractures and/or a fracture of the neck offemur, due to osteoporosis, and• has bone mineral density reading with a T-score of less than -2.5 (ie 2.5 standard deviationsbelow the young adult mean for bone density). This must be measured in at least two sites bydual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA).The unequivocal diagnosis of severe rheumatoid arthritis by a Rheumatologist. The diagnosis mustbe supported by, and evidence, all of the following criteria:• at least a six week history of severe rheumatoid arthritis which involves three or more of thefollowing joint areas:– proximal interphalangeal joints in the hands– metacarpophalangeal joints in the hands– metatarsophalangeal joints in the foot– wrist, elbow, knee, or ankle joints.• simultaneous bilateral and symmetrical joint soft tissue swelling or fluid(not bony overgrowth alone)• typical rheumatoid joint deformity• rheumatoid nodules• erosions seen on x-ray imaging• the presence of either a positive rheumatoid factor or the sensological markers consistent withthe diagnosis of severe rheumatoid arthritis.An incident in the blood vessels of the brain or bleeding in the brain leading to neurological effectsthat last for at least 24 hours. There must be clear evidence on a CT, MRI or similar scan that astroke has occurred.Transient ischaemic attacks, symptoms due to migraine, vascular disease of the optic nerve,physical head injury, reversible neurological deficit or any blood vessel incident outside thecranium, except embolism resulting in stroke, are not included.DefinitionsMLC Life Cover Super and MLC Personal Protection Portfolio PDS Page 79
