Tips to Help Avoid Glove ProblemsPROBABLE CAUSERECOMMENDED SOLUTIONPROBLEM: TACKY OR STICKY GLOVESResidual liquid soap or detergent Reduce amount of liquid soap ordetergent used when washing gloves.Heated to high temperature for toolongGloves sterilized with other goodsGloves not allowed to dry completelyafter steamingPoor powderingSurfaces of gloves touching each otherBreakdown (deterioration) of rubber(latex)Rinse gloves at least three times in cleanwater.Use 30 minutes sterilizing time at 121EC(250EF) and remove gloves fromsterilizer as soon as cycle is completed.Sterilize gloves separately.Wear “wet” within 30 minutes or allow todry for 4 to 6 hours before using.Use absorbable glove powder and followmanufacturer’s instructions to insure afilm of powder on all surfaces.Gauze or paper wicks should be insertedbetween the palm and back of hand ofeach glove and between the hand of theglove and the turned-back cuff. Thisallows steam to contact all surfacesduring sterilization and prevents surfacesfrom adhering to each other.Store in a dry, cool area. Do not store indirect sunlight.(Rubber gloves deteriorate whilestored even though they have not beenused. They become soft, sticky andunusable.)PROBLEM: EXCESSIVE TEARING OR RUPTURINGGloves used too soon followingsterilizationSource: Tomlinson 1991.Do not use gloves for 24 to 48 hours aftersterilization.
