Performing Breast and Pelvic ExaminationsLEARNING GUIDE FOR PELVIC EXAMINATIONS(To be completed by Participants)Rate the performance of each step or task observed using the following rating scale:1 Needs Improvement: Step or task not performed correctly or out of sequence (if necessary) or is omitted2 Competently Performed: Step or task performed correctly in proper sequence (if necessary) but participant doesnot progress from step to step efficiently3 Proficiently Performed: Step or task efficiently and precisely performed in the proper sequence (if necessary)LEARNING GUIDE FOR PELVIC EXAMINATIONSSTEP/TASKGETTING READY1. Explain why the examination is being done and describe the steps in theexamination.2. Ask the woman to empty her bladder and wash and rinse her abdominal andgenital area.3. Check that the instruments and supplies are available.4. Ask the woman to undress and help her onto the examining table.5. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry them with a clean,dry cloth or allow them to air dry.LOWER ABDOMINAL AND GROIN EXAMINATION1. Ask the woman to lie down on the examining table with her arms at her sides.2. Expose the entire abdomen.3. Note any swelling or bulges in the abdomen. Note the location and shape ofthe umbilicus.4. Inspect the abdomen for abnormal coloring, scars, stretch marks or rashes andlesions.5. Using light pressure with the pads of your fingers, palpate all areas of theabdomen. Identify any masses, areas of tenderness or muscular resistance.Record your findings.6. Using deeper pressure, determine size, shape, consistency, tenderness,mobility and movement of any masses. Record any masses and areas oftenderness.7. Identify any tender areas. If abnormal tenderness is present, check for reboundtenderness.8. If open sores are present on groin, put new examination or high-leveldisinfected surgical gloves on both hands before examining groin. Palpate bothgroin areas for bumps, buboes or swelling.EXTERNAL GENITAL EXAMINATION1. Ask the woman to place her heels in the stirrups. If there are no stirrups, helpher place her feet on the outside edges of the end of the table. Drape thewoman.2.
