In 2003 the total harvest of field vegetables and those under cover amounted to 5 090 700 t
and was by 389 200 t (8.3%) larger than that in 2002. Crops under covers occupied
54 408 000 m 2 , including plastic-covered greenhouses - 59.8%, glasshouses - 39.2% and
hotbeds - 1%. In 2003 the production of vegetables planted under covers was equal to 671 200 t,
of which tomatoes accounted for 55.5% and cucumbers for 29.6%. There is significant
regionalisation of vegetable cultivation in Poland. Vegetables are mainly planted around large
agglomerations, i.e. in mazowieckie, ∏ódzkie and wielkopolsie voivodships.
In 2003 fresh vegetable exports were valued at USD 205.2 million, which meant
a 42% increase on the previous year. The volume of these sales increased by as much
