Following 1990, the pattern of marine fish catches changed. Even in 1995 cod
was dominating, whereas at present it is sprat.

In 2003 Baltic Sea catches accounted for 89% of total catches as compared to
32% in 1995. The maximum Baltic Sea catches are dependent on the size of annual
fishing quotas determined by the International Baltic Sea Fishery Commission for
four fish species: sprat, herring, cod and salmon.

Production of inland fisheries covers:
- rearing and breeding carp and trout,
- professional lake and river fishing,
- amateur fishing in inland waters (angling).
According to the General Agricultural Census data, over 10 000 agricultural
holdings were involved in fish production in 2002, i.e. by 25% fewer than in 1996. In
accordance with the Inland Fisheries Institute information for 2003:
- there were ca 150 commercial carp production facilities
- there were ca 600 farms utilising lakes for fishing purposes
- there were ca 300 large carp production facilities.
In 2003, about 1 million people were engaged in angling and 1 500 companies
provided services for angling.
