FOOD INDUSTRY Consumption of various products differs among main socio-economic groups of households, though an average energy and nutritious value of a daily food intake differs insignificantly. In addition, food consumption varies depending on the family size, the education level, the place of residence, etc. There are marked differences in the consumption level of staple foodstuffs between Poland and the UE and among particular EU member states. The consumption of staple foodstuffs in Poland, excluding fruit, beef, fish and milk, is within the bracket to be found in the EU. The consumption of the aforementioned products is lower, mainly due to their relatively high prices or culinary habits. Moreover, the consumption eggs, vegetable oils and animal fats and meat is lower, excluding pork, the consumption of which is higher. It can be stated that a cheaper nutrition model is used in Poland than on average in the EU. At the same time relatively cheap food in Poland offsets a difficult income situation, enabling the consumption of majority of products at the level close to that of the EU. 38
Programme PD˚, Try Fine Food FOOD INDUSTRY On 1 May 2004 the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development took a decision to embark on a new Programme, PD˚ Try Fine Food to replace the hitherto programme Polish Fine Food. The main objective of the programme is to inform consumers of high quality food products. The programme is voluntary and open to each entrepreneur from the European Union. The PD˚ logo will be assigned only to those products which comply with the criteria established by the Scientific Council for Food Product Quality composed of independent experts. The PD˚ Tr y Fine Food logo is to help the consumer to knowingly choose the product suitable for him or her. Simultaneously, the objective of the Community food policy is being pursued, i.e. expanding the range of diverse products of high quality on the Common Market. The logo’s aim is also to enhance consumer’s confidence in the food product through information on its high and stable quality. It is only food producers that have a right to submit applications for PD˚ Try Fine Food logo and the application is free of charge.
