anges in Poland: the Carpathians with the highest mountains Tatras (the highest peak Rysy – 2 499 metres above the sea level), the Sudeten with the Karkonosze mountains (the highest peak Ânie˝ka – 1602 metres above the sea level) and the Âwi´tokrzyskie mountains in the interior of the country (the highest peak ¸ysica – 612 metres above the sea level). Poland is situated in the basins of the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the Black Sea. There are many rivers in its territory (the longest one, the Odra has the length of 742 km in Poland and the Vistula – 1047 km) and lakes (the deepest Haƒcza – 108.5 m and the largest Âniardwy – 113.8 km 2 ) as well as canals and artificial reservoirs. Poland has a moderate climate and changeable weather conditions. The summer lasts from 60 days in the lake districts up to 110 days in the Silesia Lowland, with fluctuations in particular years. Within the last 3 years the average air temperature was 8.3-9, 1-7.1ºC. The warmest part is south-west, whereas the coolest – north-east. Figure 1. Sixty six towns have the poviat status. The auxiliary units in communes are solectwa (the lowest group of administrative division, usually comprising a single village), whose number is 40 200.
