06 Starting and drivingGeneralDriving in waterThe car can be driven through water at amaximum depth of 40 cm at a maximumspeed of 10 km/h. Extra caution should beexercised when passing through flowing water.IMPORTANTEngine damage may occur if water entersthe air filter. In greater depths, water can enter the transmission. This reduces the lubricating abilityof the oils and shortens the service life ofthese systems. When driving in water, maintain a low speedand do not stop the car. When the water hasbeen passed, depress the brake pedal lightlyand check that full brake function isachieved. Water and mud for example canmake the brake linings wet resulting in delayedbrake function.NOTEClean the electric contacts of the electricengine block heater and trailer coupling afterdriving in water and mud.IMPORTANTDo not let the car stand with water over thesills for any long period of time. This couldcause electrical malfunctions. In the event of stalling in water, do not try torestart. Tow the car out of the water.Do not overload the batteryThe electrical functions in the car load thebattery to varying degrees. Avoid having theignition key in position II when the engine isswitched off. Use position I instead, as lesspower is used. The 12 volt outlet in the cargoarea supplies power even when the ignitionkey is removed.Examples of functions that use a lot ofpower:• ventilation fan• windscreen wipers• audio equipment (high volume)• parking lights. Also, be aware of different accessories thatload the electrical system. Do not use functionswhich use a lot of power when the engineis switched off.If the battery voltage is low, a message appearson the display. The energy-savingfunction shuts down certain functions or reducesthe load on the battery by, for example, slowing the ventilation fan and switchingoff the audio equipment. Charge the batteryby starting the engine.06113
