01 SafetySide airbags (SIPS bags) 01Side airbags – SIPS bagWARNINGDo not put objects in the area between theoutside of the seat and the door panel,since this area is required by the side airbag.Side airbag locations.A large proportion of the collision force istransferred by the SIPS (Side Impact ProtectionSystem) to beams, pillars, the floor, theroof and other structural parts of the body.The side airbags at the driver’s and front passengerseats protect the chest area and arean important part of the SIPS. The side airbagsare located in the front seat backrests.Inflated side airbag.WARNINGSide airbags are a supplement to the SIPSsystem. Always wear a seatbelt.WARNINGRepairs must only be performed by an authorisedVolvo workshop.Work on the SIPS system can cause malfunctionand result in serious personalinjury.WARNINGUse only Volvo genuine car seat covers, orseat covers approved by Volvo. Other seatcovers may impede the operation of theside air bags.Child seats and side airbagsThe side airbag does not diminish the protectionprovided by the car to children seated ina child seat or on a booster cushion.A child seat or booster cushion can beplaced on the front passenger seat providedthat the car does not have an activated 1 passengerairbag.1 For information on activated/deactivated airbag(SRS) see page 1921

A sufficiently violent collisiontrips the sensors and the side airbagsare inflated. The airbag inflates between theoccupant and the door panel and therebycushions the initial impact while deflating.The side airbag is normally only deployed onthe side of the collision.22
