The population <strong>in</strong> these isl<strong>and</strong>s was 834,000 people <strong>in</strong> 2004, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g about 2500registered fishers.Guadeloupe <strong>and</strong> Mart<strong>in</strong>ique are volcanic <strong>and</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>ous isl<strong>and</strong>s, situated roughly <strong>in</strong> thecentre <strong>of</strong> the West Indies <strong>and</strong> surrounded by a narrow isl<strong>and</strong> shelf that receives high levels <strong>of</strong>volcanic sediments. Corals grow on the rocky surfaces <strong>and</strong> form fr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>reefs</strong> on the easternsides. These <strong>reefs</strong> are especially important for tourism; 665,000 tourists visited Guadeloupe <strong>in</strong><strong>2005</strong> <strong>and</strong> 381,000 visited Mart<strong>in</strong>ique <strong>in</strong> 2004. Thus tourism is a major economic contributor<strong>in</strong> the FWI with hotel capacity <strong>of</strong> Guadeloupe <strong>and</strong> Mart<strong>in</strong>ique exceed<strong>in</strong>g 13,000 rooms <strong>and</strong>additional accommodation available <strong>in</strong> small-scale rural cottages. The most common mar<strong>in</strong>etourist activities are glass-bottom boat tours, kayak<strong>in</strong>g, water ski<strong>in</strong>g, surf<strong>in</strong>g, sailboat rentals,sport fish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> particularly scuba div<strong>in</strong>g. There are 40 scuba div<strong>in</strong>g clubs <strong>in</strong> Guadeloupe <strong>and</strong>a similar number <strong>in</strong> Mart<strong>in</strong>ique, with div<strong>in</strong>g focused on the <strong>Caribbean</strong> (leeward) coasts. Forexample, about 100,000 divers visit the Îlets Pigeon <strong>in</strong> Guadeloupe each year.86
