The Government of India andthe State Governments are conscious of thisdisturbing phenomenon and have initiateda string of steps to curb this trend altogetherin terms of better security arrangements forthe field police units and better training ofpolice personnel to handle such situationseffectively.Number of firearms looted from Police/Police Stations at the All India level over thelast eight years 2002 to 2010 is depicted in thegraph below. It reveals generally a decreasingtrend for the looting of the arms from thepolice custody except 2004, 2009 & 2010when it increased significantly. The looting ofarms generally takes place in the terrorists /extremists affected areas. The aim of extremists136
