When you learn a language,the way you learn the most wordsis through context.Context meansto figure outwhat wordsmean by howthey are used inthe sentence orparagraph wherethey appear.Words or phrases around anunfamiliar word which can help youunderstand the meaning of this newword are called CONTEXT CLUES.1) EXAMPLE CLUES2) COMPARISON CLUES3) CONTRAST CLUES4) INFERRING MEANING FROM CONTEXT5) SYNONYMS6) DEFINITION7) EXPLANATION“Biodegradable materials like leftover foods,fruit peelings, and plant leaves must beseparated from those that do not decompose.”In this sentence, you are given examples ofbiodegradable materials. Therefore, you canunderstand what the word means even withouta dictionary.1
6/5/2012“The taciturn student is like a mute television.”In the above sentence, a comparison is beingmade between a student and a television.Therefore, the adjective “taciturn” has a similarmeaning to “mute”. In other words, the studentisn’t talking.“In March, the weather is pacific,unlike the stormy weather during themonths of June and July.”In this sentence the word “unlike”gives you the clue that the meaningof “pacific” is contrasting with“stormy”.“The OFW is well remunerated for his work. Hereceives PHP 50,000 every month.”Since the second sentence is talking about theOFW’s salary, you can infer that the word“remunerated” has to do with receivingpayment for your work.“Poems written by Andress Mojica are usuallyunfathomable. Many cannot understand themessage he wants to convey.”Here, you can tell that the meaning of“unfathomable” is probably synonymous to“cannot understand.”“A philatelist is someone who collects differentkinds of stamps.”This sentence defines exactly what a philatelistis. Therefore, this is called a “definition” clue.“The stratification of society makes cleardistinctions between the rich and poor. Thelevel occupied by the rich is far from theposition the poor people hold.”The second sentence explains the differentlevels between rich and poor. Therefore, youcan conclude that stratification has to do withdifferent levels.2
