How can we ensureEquity & Excellencein our schools?SERC’s Initiative on Diversity in Education,or IDE, seeks to build the capacity and skill ofeducators to respond effectively to the needs of diverselearners and their families. To accomplish this, theinitiative has designed a service delivery model forparticipants to apply cultural responsiveness, socialjustice, and racial equity to their work.This powerful, personally transforming experienceinvolves discussion, reflection, and ultimately actionaimed at giving all students an equal opportunity toachieve. Participants work to reach these goals byfocusing on five elements:LeadershipSchool-Family-Community PartnershipsProfessional CapacitySchool ClimateTeaching and LearningIDE makes this process accessible to everyone with a stake in a thriving school community—teachers, administrators,support personnel, students, families, community members, policy makers, etc.—and structures the content to meetthe specific needs of our partners. Some of the content might include:• developing a continuum of support and environment that is culturally responsive;• understanding, accessing, and utilizing the inherent assets in diverse families and communities;• empowering youth to have a greater role in their educational development; and• matching instruction (as well as assessments, technology, etc.) to the needs of English language learners andother groups.To learn how IDE can meet your needs:Gerald M.
