International GEO Workshop on <strong>SAR</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Support</strong> <strong>Agricultural</strong> Moni<strong>to</strong>ring Brian Brisco (Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, CCRS) presented the state of <strong>SAR</strong> for agricultural moni<strong>to</strong>ring. He emphasized that no spaceborne <strong>SAR</strong> yet has been designed for land applications, so often the configuration is sub-optimal for agricultural moni<strong>to</strong>ring. From a technical perspective, the backscatter from the soil, vegetation and interaction terms are integrated and this confuses the interpretation of the satellite measurements; these terms need <strong>to</strong> be separated by multiple observations and new technology. Dr. Brisco highlighted the benefits of multi-frequency, multi-temporal, multi-incidence and multi- polarization approaches. Adding optical EO data can increase the accuracy dramatically. He presented the barriers <strong>to</strong> greater operational adoption of <strong>SAR</strong> and the remaining research and development (R&D) needs. 5
