3.3 Transitioning from Research <strong>to</strong> Operational Use and Capacity
Building
This section summarizes the main findings of the three breakout groups for Transitioning
from Research <strong>to</strong> Operational Use and Capacity Building. Again, the findings of the three
breakout groups are shown in Appendix C.
The first priority challenge was <strong>SAR</strong> Data, in particular the following attributes:
• Cost
• Mode of purchase
• In-situ data
• Interoperability.
The second priority challenge was Training and Acquiring Knowledge <strong>to</strong> Use the Data
and Understanding the Application of the Data. This challenge had the following aspects:
• Cost of training
• Location
• Language
• Relevancy.
The third priority challenge was Tools, including:
• Software <strong>to</strong>ols for different levels of users
• Ease of use of Software <strong>to</strong>ols
• Hardware
• Complementary (field) <strong>to</strong>ols
• Accessing technical support.
The fourth priority challenge was Infrastructure. Considerations here consisted of:
• Internet capacity
• Human capacities
• Institutional capacity.
The fifth priority challenge was Managerial and Political <strong>Support</strong>.
The main Challenges/ Solutions/ Actions/ Owners are shown in Table 3.
