Panel Discussion A concluding panel discussion was convened where several experts representing different user communities were asked <strong>to</strong> comment on the recommendations. The participants were: • Space Agencies: Gladys Rodriguez Ortega and Marc Thibeault (CONAE) • Value Added Community: Trevor Taylor (PCI Geomatics) • Operational <strong>Agricultural</strong> Moni<strong>to</strong>ring Community: Ian Jarvis (AAFC) • University Researchers: Christiane Schmullius (Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany) • Developing Country Scientists / Users: El Sayed Hermas (National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences, Egypt). 4.1 Space Agency Summary On behalf of the space agency community, Gladys Rodriguez Ortega and Marc Thibeault provided the following response <strong>to</strong> the recommendations. 1. CONAE prioritizes the use of the data, especially for users in Argentina. 2. CONAE promotes educational development, including outreach <strong>to</strong> children at a young age 3. The EO community needs better coordination between the Space Agencies, so that each country can use the data of other countries. 4. Space Agencies also need better coordination with the <strong>Agricultural</strong> CoP, suggesting that GEO and CEOS are important and can help in this coordination. 5. There is a strong need for a coordinated multi-frequency <strong>SAR</strong> constellation. 6. More funding is needed for R&D and pilot programs. 4.2 Value Added Community Summary On behalf of the value-added community (software and <strong>to</strong>ol providers), Trevor Taylor empasized the following points: 1. PCI is a member of the Strategic Council of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). The OGC may be relevant <strong>to</strong> the <strong>Agricultural</strong> CoP. 2. We need more accessible, low cost data, which would have the benefits of: a. Reducing the gap between research and operations. b. Deriving information products like flood maps. c. Facilitating the flow of information <strong>to</strong> consumers. 4.3 Operational <strong>Agricultural</strong> Moni<strong>to</strong>ring Community Summary 26
