M.*ABSTRACTAn experiment was conducted to assess genetic variability and interrelationshipamong yield component characters and with seed yield in mungbean (Vignaradiata L. Wilczek). Higher genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variationwas observed for number of primary branches/ plant whereas moderate valueswere recorded for number of pods/ plant and number of clusters/ plant, indicatingthat these characters could be used as selection indices for the yield improvement.Number of pods/plant, days to 50% flowering, plant height, 100-seed weight,seed yield/ plant and days to maturity registered high heritability. Seed yieldexhibited significant positive correlation with number of pods/ plant, number ofpods/ cluster and number of clusters/ plant at phenotypic level and significantpositive correlation with number of pods/ cluster and number of pods/ plant atgenotypic level. Number of pods/ plant depicted maximum direct effect on seedyield followed by number of seeds/ pod, pod length and 100-seed weight at bothgenotypic and phenotypic levels. Therefore, there is a better chance forimprovement of seed yield through the direct selection for these characters inmungbean.Key words: Mungbean, variability, heritability, genotypic and phenotypiccorrelationINTRODUCTIONMungbean is one of the important pulse crops of India and is suitable for cultivationunder different climatic conditions.
