The crop and relative growth ratesrecorded increasing trend with progress in crop growth, however, from 80 DAS to harvestrecorded decreasing trend (Table 1).YIELD ATTRIBUTES AND YIELDThe weed control methods significantly enhanced yield components, viz., pods/plant, kernels/ pod, seed index with concomitant increase in pod and biological yield.Total number of pods/ plant and kernels/ pod were observed maximum (26.99 plant -1 and2.46 pod -1 ) in weed-free over other weed control methods which was at par withoxyfluorfen 100 ml/ha at 2 DAS and these parameters were significantly the lowest inweedy-check. (Table 2). The seed index was recorded significantly the highest (58.2 g)in weed-free as compared to other treatments. This was followed by oxyfluorfen 100ml/ha at 2 DAS, mechanical and one hand weeding at 20 DAS were at par with eachother.Seed index was significantly the lowest in weedy-check (Table 2).Among the weed control methods, weed-free recorded maximum pod and biologicalyield of 30.58 and 75.22 q/ha compared to 16.93 and 33.46 q/ha produced under weedycheck.This was followed by Oxyfluorfen 100 ml/ha at 2 DAS, mechanical and one handweeding at 20 DAS were at par with each other. Pod and biological yields weresignificantly the lowest in weedy-check. Highest harvest index was obtained in weedfreefollowed by in oxyfluorfen 100 ml/ha at 2 DAS (Table 2). It is an established factthat least weed competition during critical phase of crop growth exerts an importantregulative function on complex process of yield formation due to better availability ofwater, space and nutrients to the crop plant which are pre- requisite for higher metabolicactivity in plants. Earlier it was well emphasized that reduced crop-weed competitionunder weed control methods, markedly influenced source by virtue of higherphotosynthetic and metabolic activities. It is an established fact that balanced sourcesinkrelationship helps crop to achieve higher productivity. Thus, higher pod yield underleast weed competition through adoption of either weed-free conditions i.e., weed-free,mechanical weeding at 20 DAS, one hand weeding at 20 DAS, or oxyfluorfen 100 ml/haat 2 DAS seem to be an account of their influence on both these aspects of yield formation,i.e., source (dry-matter accumulation) and sink development (yield attributes). Betterefficacy of weed-free conditions and oxyfluorfen 100 ml/ha at 2 DAS for managingweeds in groundnut crop was also observed by Pannu et al, (1991).Thus, it is concluded that oxyfluorfen 100 ml/ha at 2 DAS is most effective weedcontrol practice for harnessing good yield of kharif groundnut on sandy loam soil ofAllahabad region.93
