Prasad •ABSTRACTAn experiment was carried out at the Orchidarium of the Department of thehorticulture. SHIATS, Allahabad under shade net house during August 2011-April 2012. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design (CRD)with 12 treatments each treatment replicated, thrice. The effect of 12 differentpotting media viz., Rice husk, Wheat husk ,Tile bits, Poultry manure, Vermicompost,Charcoal, Coconut dust dust, Sugarcane trashes, Coconut fibers andLeaf mould, Gravel jelly and Bricks pieces. Studied It was observed that treatmentof tile bits pieces found to the best potting medium for growing Dendrobiumorchids and produced the best vegetative growth, spike yield beside giving thebest benefit cost ratio compared to other treatments.Key words-Dendrobium orchid, C.R.D, potting media.INTRODUCTIONDendrobium, the doyen among all orchids. aptly called as the "Angel Flowers".Orchids occupy the prime position among all the flowering plants valued for cut flowerproduction and as potted plants. Orchids differ so much from each other in terms ofgrowth habits, form, size, shape of colour. Pacennila flowering herbs. They are epiphytic,terrestrial, saprophytic or lithophytic in nature. One characteristic feature of all orchids isthe presence of velamen tissue around the true root for water and mineral absorption.Orchids are gown all over the world, ranging from tropic to temperate regions and itrequires annual rain fall as 1100 cm with a humidity more than 70% the materials usedfor growing orchids are entirely different from those used for other plants. An idealpotting medium should provide firm anchorage, good aeration, retard disease & pathogenicfactors, keep the plant free from rotting & provide a bit of nutrient, readily available &ecofriendl. Therefore the present study was aimed to investigate the effect of pottingmedia on growth of spike yield of Dendrobium orchids.•M.Sc.
