Factors Facilitating Participation of Women in Mahatma Gandhi NREGS 101Awareness and Participation Scores Across the Status of WomenAwareness as well as participation scores are the least for singlewomen who are deserted and divorced but it is not the case with widowedwomen whose awareness score is low while participation score is high. Onthe contrary, for unmarried women awareness score is the least andparticipation score is the highest. For married women both the awarenessas well as participation scores are at higher level. From the data it may beinferred that married women and in case of few widowed women, wherethey have family members’ support, they could fare well in both awarenessand participation. In case of deserted as well as divorced women lack ofany support from other members of family led to low scores in bothawareness as well as participation. Unmarried women who are MGNREGSworkers do not have good education but are in dire need of employment soparticipation is high but awareness is low.RS 97
102 Factors Facilitating Participation of Women in Mahatma Gandhi NREGSAwareness and Participation Across Occupation GroupsIt is observed from the data that most of the respondents are fromoccupations such as agricultute labour, non-agriculture labour, cultivatorsand others who include artisans, business people and people who are inservice. It was found that awareness and participation scores are high foragriculture labourers followed by cultivators and then non-agriculturelabourers. In all the cases, awareness scores are lower compared toparticipation scores. It is to be noted that in areas where awareness levelsare low (unemployment allowance, social audit), participation levels areequally low; an indication of consistency. Such scenario suggests that moreefforts have to be made to increase the awareness levels of women workersto make NREGS a really rights-based one at field level.Awareness and Participation Scores Across Income GroupsEconomic status of the stakeholders always have an impact on theprogramme related parameters. In the present study too there is a clearassociation between income levels and awareness and participation scores.Both awareness and participation scores have shown rising trend withRS 97
