The average days of employment has been workedout for respondents in the sample districts. It is highest for Mahaboobnagardistrict of Andhra Pradesh with 66 days followed by Thrissur districtof Kerala with 50 days. The least is recorded in the South 24 Paraganasdistrict of West Bengal with 14 days and is 26 days in the Gaya district ofBihar. (These are the employment days reported for 2009-10). Details canbe seen from Fig. 16.When it was further enquired about the type of works in whichrespondents have participated, it was known that in Mahaboobnagar districtof Andhra Pradesh, the respondents have done works like jungle clearance,bunding, land levelling, widening and deepening feeder channel, de-siltingpercolation tanks, pits for horticulture plantation, silt application etc. InGaya district of Bihar respondents took up works like digging, ruralconnectivity, plantation and forest roads. In Thrissur district of Kerala, bushclearance, agriculture works under watershed, bunding, rural connectivity,irrigation works like desilting of canals, ponds, drainage etc. and floodcontrol works were taken up. It can beinferred that in all the sample districts, a number of works reflecting localneeds were taken up.Type of ParticipationTo measure participation of wage seekers especially women, theirparticipation in MGNREGS is captured in five areas. These areas areparticipation in the process of MGNREGS, approaching officials for gettinginformation on different aspects, approaching officials in the case ofdifficulties/grievances, participation as members in different committees,participating in exercising their rights and taking decisions pertaining toMGNREGS at household as well as the community level. A scale wasadministered to capture the quality of participation of women i.e. reallyactive (2), moderate (1) or no participation (0). Participation was consideredactive if women took the lead, moderate if woman along with men took theinitiative and nil if men only participated in the activity. In the cases, wherenone from the family took part in the process, it was also treated notapplicable case. The results are presented in Table 5.21.RS 97
