Rice is theState’s pr<strong>in</strong>cipal food crop. Other food crops are pulses, oilseeds, wheat,tobacco, sugarcane and potatoes. Jute is the ma<strong>in</strong> cash crop <strong>of</strong> theregi<strong>on</strong>. Tea is also produced commercially.South 24 ParaganasSouth 24 Parganas district is an important district <strong>of</strong> WestBengal State with its district headquarters <strong>in</strong> Alipore. It has the urban fr<strong>in</strong>ge<strong>of</strong> Calcutta <strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>e side and the remote river<strong>in</strong>e villages <strong>in</strong> the Sundarbans.The district has a total area <strong>of</strong> 8165.05 sq km and a populati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> 6909015.The sex ratio <strong>of</strong> the district is 938 and has a density <strong>of</strong> 694. Agriculture,<strong>in</strong>dustry and pisciculture are all at their peak <strong>in</strong> the district. The districtcomprises five sub-divisi<strong>on</strong>s, 29 blocks and 312 GPs.KeralaKerala is a State <strong>in</strong> the south-western part <strong>of</strong> India. It was created<strong>on</strong> 1 November 1956, with the pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the States Reorganisati<strong>on</strong>Act br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g together the areas where Malayalam was the dom<strong>in</strong>antlanguage. The State has an area <strong>of</strong> 38,863 km 2 and is bordered byKarnataka to the north, Tamil Nadu to the south and the east and the ArabianSea <strong>on</strong> the west. Major cities <strong>in</strong> Kerala are Thiruvananthapuram, Kochiand Kozhikode. Kerala is also known for its many small towns that arescattered across the State, thus creat<strong>in</strong>g a higher density <strong>of</strong> populati<strong>on</strong>.Kerala’s 14 districts, which serve as the adm<strong>in</strong>istrative regi<strong>on</strong>s fortaxati<strong>on</strong> purposes, are further sub-divided <strong>in</strong>to 63 taluks; these have fiscaland adm<strong>in</strong>istrative powers over settlements with<strong>in</strong> their borders, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>gma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>of</strong> local land records. Taluks <strong>of</strong> Kerala are further divided <strong>in</strong>to1453 revenue villages and 1007 Gram Panchayats.Kerala has a higher Human Development Index than all other states<strong>in</strong> India. The State has a literacy rate <strong>of</strong> 94.59 per cent, the highest <strong>in</strong>India. Its 9,400 km² <strong>of</strong> forests <strong>in</strong>clude tropical wet evergreen and semievergreenforests. Altogether, 24 per cent <strong>of</strong> Kerala is forested.
